What I Learned While Designing My Blended Learning Course: Challenges, Growth, and What I’d Do Differently Next Time

Designing a blended learning course has been one of the most rewarding—and humbling—experiences of my instructional journey. Even with years of experience in curriculum and instruction, stepping into the role of designer for a fully blended environment challenged me in new and unexpected ways. As I reflect on the development process, several key lessons stand out, along with a clearer sense of what I would adjust the next time around.

Reflection:  Infusing Digital Technologies for Assessment

A significant area of learning in this journey has been the exploration of digital assessment practices. Digital assessment tools provide dynamic opportunities for real-time feedback, student voice, and data-informed instruction that supports diverse learners (Darling-Hammond et al., 2021). I have strengthened my understanding of assessment modalities within blended environments, including formative, summative, self-assessment, and peer assessment supported by platforms such as EdPuzzle, Google Forms, Flip, and LMS-embedded quizzes.

Furthermore, I deepened my capacity to design authentic assessments that align to real-world applications. Authentic tasks encourage students to apply knowledge and skills in meaningful contexts, which research identifies as essential for deep learning and transfer (Wiggins & McTighe, 2020). Similarly, digital technology has enhanced my ability to facilitate problem-based and learner-centered instruction, giving students opportunities to collaborate, research, and create solutions with teacher guidance acting as a facilitator rather than director (Hmelo-Silver, 2017).

Reflection on Creating Technology for Authentic Learning and Assessment

Creating instructional technology resources required me to apply theory to practice by designing meaningful, student-centered digital learning experiences. Developing technology-enhanced lessons challenged me to consider both pedagogical intent and user experience. This process reinforced the importance of designing tasks that promote inquiry, collaboration, and reflection, rather than passive consumption of content (Beatty, 2020).

In producing authentic assessments and blended learning tools, I gained confidence in integrating multimedia, interactive platforms, and feedback loops that support ongoing learning. I also learned the importance of accessibility, navigation clarity, and scaffolding to ensure equitable learning opportunities for all students. The act of building technology tools—rather than only studying them—solidified my understanding of digital design principles and strengthened my instructional creativity and flexibility.

Ultimately, the experience has shaped my identity as a reflective technology-enhanced educator who is committed to continuous learning and innovation. As I move forward, I will continue to refine my strategies, analyze student outcomes, and incorporate emerging technologies to create meaningful and empowering blended learning experiences.
